Shopify Product Page Optimisation: 12 Improvements That Increase Sales

Your product page is where a visitor decides to buy or leave. Most stores treat it as an afterthought: a supplier photo, a copied description and a price. Small improvements here usually have a bigger impact than any new app. These are the changes I make first on client stores.

Photos and media

1. Show the product from every useful angle

Front, back, side, close-up of the material, and the product in use. Shoppers cannot touch the product, so the photos must answer their questions.

2. Keep images consistent

Use the same aspect ratio and background across the catalogue. Consistency looks professional and keeps the layout from jumping around.

3. Add a short video when it helps

A ten-second clip showing fit, texture or how something works can answer more questions than a paragraph of text.

Words that sell

4. Lead with benefits, then details

Start with what the product does for the customer, then list specifications. "Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours" is more persuasive than "double-wall vacuum insulation" — include both.

5. Use scannable formatting

Short paragraphs, bullet points and clear headings like Size & fit, Materials and Care. Many people only scan.

6. Write original descriptions

Copied supplier text appears on many other websites. Original descriptions are better for customers and for search engines.

Price, delivery and trust

7. Show delivery time and returns near the button

"Delivered in 3–5 days · Easy 7-day returns" answers two of the biggest objections right where the buying decision happens.

8. Show genuine reviews

Real reviews, including photos from customers, build trust. Never write fake reviews — they damage trust and can break platform rules and consumer laws.

9. Make contact easy

A visible link to chat, WhatsApp or email reassures first-time buyers that a real business is behind the store.

Layout and usability

10. Design for thumbs

On mobile, the variant selector and the add-to-cart button should be large and easy to reach. A sticky add-to-cart bar can help on long pages.

11. Make variant choices obvious

Use swatches for colours and buttons for sizes instead of dropdowns where possible, and link a size guide.

12. Keep it fast

Compress images and remove apps that inject scripts you no longer use. A slow product page quietly loses sales.

Tip: Change one thing at a time and watch your conversion rate for a couple of weeks. That way you know which change actually helped.

A product page structure that works

  1. Title, price and a one-line benefit.
  2. Image gallery (with zoom) and a short video if useful.
  3. Variant selectors and quantity.
  4. Add-to-cart and delivery/returns information directly underneath.
  5. Short description with key benefits.
  6. Detailed tabs or sections: size & fit, materials, care, shipping.
  7. Genuine reviews.
  8. Related products.

This order answers questions in the sequence most shoppers ask them: "What is it? Does it look good? Does it fit me? How fast can I get it? Can I trust this store?"

Mistakes that quietly lose sales

  • Hiding the price or delivery cost until checkout.
  • Using only one product photo.
  • Variant dropdowns with unclear names such as "Option 1".
  • Pop-ups that cover the page as soon as it loads on mobile.
  • Out-of-stock products with no "notify me" option or alternatives.
  • Walls of text with no headings or bullets.

How to measure improvement

In Shopify analytics, watch the product page's add-to-cart rate and the overall conversion rate. Compare periods of similar length and traffic, and remember that seasonal changes and promotions also affect results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important element of a product page?

Clear, high-quality photos followed by a benefit-led description and visible delivery and return information.

Should I use apps to improve product pages?

Only when an app solves a specific problem, such as collecting reviews. Many improvements can be made in the theme editor for free.

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer the questions a buyer would ask in a shop. For simple products that may be 100 words; for complex ones, much more.
