Shopify SEO Basics: How to Get Your Store Found on Google

Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying. Search traffic, once you earn it, keeps arriving. Shopify handles many technical SEO details automatically, but the parts that matter most — content, structure and relevance — are up to you. Here is where to start.

Write down how a customer would describe your product to a friend. Then type those phrases into Google and look at the autocomplete suggestions and the "People also ask" box. You are looking for phrases that show buying intent, such as "handmade leather wallet for men" rather than just "wallet".

2. Map keywords to pages

  • Broad phrases (e.g. "leather wallets") → collection pages.
  • Specific phrases (e.g. "slim leather card holder") → product pages.
  • Questions (e.g. "how to clean a leather wallet") → blog posts that link to products.

Give each page one main topic so pages do not compete with each other.

3. Write titles and meta descriptions

In Shopify, scroll to Search engine listing at the bottom of a product, collection or page and click Edit. Write a title of roughly 50–60 characters that includes the main phrase naturally, and a description of about 150 characters that gives a reason to click.

4. Improve collection pages

Collection pages often rank for the most valuable searches, yet many stores leave them as a grid of products with no text. Add a short, helpful introduction explaining what the collection includes and who it is for.

5. Make product pages genuinely useful

Original descriptions, clear specifications, sizing, care instructions and genuine reviews help shoppers and give search engines more to understand. See our product page guide.

6. Name and describe images

Before uploading, rename files descriptively (brown-leather-card-holder.jpg, not IMG_2041.jpg) and add alt text that describes the image. This helps accessibility and image search.

7. Keep your structure simple

A clear menu — Home → Collection → Product — helps both people and search engines. Link related products and relevant blog posts to each other.

8. Keep the store fast

Remove unused apps, compress images and choose a well-built theme. Speed affects user experience, and user experience affects sales and search performance.

9. Connect Google Search Console

  1. Add your store as a property in Google Search Console and verify ownership.
  2. Submit your sitemap. Shopify generates it automatically at /sitemap.xml.
  3. Check the Pages report regularly for errors and see which searches bring visitors.

10. Be patient and consistent

SEO results build over months, not days. Improve a few pages every week, publish helpful content, and track progress in Search Console.

Note: Avoid shortcuts such as buying links or stuffing keywords into text. They can harm your store's visibility and they make pages worse for real customers.

A worked example

Imagine a store selling handmade soy candles. A sensible SEO plan might look like this:

PageMain phraseExample title
Collectionsoy candlesHandmade Soy Candles | Brand Name
Productlavender soy candleLavender Soy Candle – 200g, 40-Hour Burn | Brand Name
Blog posthow to make candles last longerHow to Make Candles Last Longer: 7 Simple Tips

Each page targets a different intent, the blog post links to the collection, and the collection links to its best products.

Common Shopify SEO mistakes

  • Leaving default titles like "Products – My Store".
  • Copying manufacturer descriptions word for word.
  • Deleting products that had traffic without redirecting their URLs (use Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects).
  • Creating many near-identical collections that compete with each other.
  • Uploading images named "IMG_1234".
